Season keeps giving…big fish

season-keeps-giving-big-fish

With the water on the edge a balmy 27 degrees (finally! After 24 for much of October), and the currents pushing in from the east, the big fish continue to show up. On the Ribbons there’s been much pelagic action with huge ‘schools’ of pilots whales coming in and yellowfin on the edge. As Dan McCarthy tells me, the signs are good for the aggregation this year. But with the aggregations noticeably absent for the last couple of years at least, I’m not sure how many will be booked and fishing into November!?!

Anyways, among yesterday’s big fish, we accounted for a very big model ourselves on board KEKOA with Captain Luke Fallon.  The lures has been in the water less than 20 minutes when we marked her coming up and not long after spotted her checking out the short left and then we were on. Angler Glen was put through his paces for just shy of three hours before we had her beside the boat for release with plenty left in her tank (in Glen’s not so much ;-) ) – Luke put her at over 1100lbs!  And a short time later we released another which was a first marlin for angler Brett. We also had bites out of two blue marlin before returning to the edge at the end of the day.

Likewise, Capt. Steve Ahlers on Hellraiser tells me he had a great day on the water releasing three from four including two that he put at 900++! Steve says that they’ve had an awesome couple of weeks and the fishing has been red hot. Click to see both photos open in window gallery.

Capt. Brett Goetze’s Amokura also had a big fish to end their day.   Brett says that they went 3 from 3 with two small ones and caught a nice one that he put at 850lbs just as they were about to pull the lines in.

I also head that Capt. Adam Jordan’s Iona II released four smaller fish and lost a big one nearby while Capt. Ross Finlayson’s Top Shot continued his run of big and small with another big and small fish yesterday. Capt. Tim Richardson’s Tradition also added another two fish to the season tally from four bites heading south.

I also had a report and some photos (below) from Rhys Moore on Reg’s My Space II. Rhys reports that fishing on Sunday they caught a fat little one on Opal Ridge Jack Moore with Reg driving. They had a couple more of similar size come up for a look but no cigar and had another one on for young angler Jardy Ward but lost him after a hard slog down deep.

Hervey Bay Game Fishing Comp

Does anyone have a report from Hervey Bay?  I heard that Mistress took out the comp with 12 tags but no details. Would love to hear more!

Raise the bill 2nd with 11 blacks
Viking 3rd place with 5 blacks and 2 blues
31 boats fished it with everyone catching blacks and the boats that went wide found plenty of blues with RUN going 3 from 7 on Saturday and seeing 2 more that wouldn’t bite
