We’re just about to head out for our first heavy tackle day of the 2011 season and we can’t wait to get out there and join the crews already fishing along the reef. And word is that there have been a few more big fish caught over the last couple of days which means great things for the start of the Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic. I had a quick telephone call from Capt. Chris Jolly on Amokura yesterday afternoon who told me they’ve been seeing fish every day and had a great day Wednesday with a 900lb-er for Phil McCloy released in the middle. I also heard a whisper that Capt. Hayden Bell on Release had released a couple of big fish up the top on Wednesday as well.
Yesterday, Brendan and Tony, the owners of Rat Bag headed out from Port Douglas for four days fishing. They tell me they are seriously under-crewed with just the two of them on board. But that didn’t stop them getting straight in on the action with a 400lb-er off St. Crispins Reef that took them just under 3 hours — it took the wog head on 10kg line!!
Just a quick report as we get ready to go. Hopefully some photos tomorrow!
